As a way of introducing this team effort, this is how we have started the first phase.
We decided to focus initially on identifying as many Lewis households as we can that were recorded in the middle of the 19th century.
We have broken down the research into geographic areas. We hope to gather both volunteers and data by offering the chance to collect records from specific areas of a manageable size. This will usually be from a census, as near to 1850 as possible, depending on the country in question.
The size of the area a volunteer will look at will depend on the numbers of Lewises in that area.
How You Can Help
We hope to collect this information with the help of the family history community who have an interest in the Lewis surname anywhere in the world.
We are looking for volunteers who can submit a GEDCOM file of their information, which will be uploaded into our Lewis One-Name Study website lewis.one-name.net
If you have records of Lewis families who appear in any census close to 1850 and can supply them in a GEDCOM format, please get in touch with us. If you would like to become more involved in the Lewis Study, you are welcome to join our team via the Guild, by becoming a member and a study associate to the Lewis Study.
